In these waters, there is an abundance of mullet which dolphin prey on and virtually no predators. This allow dolphin pods to create a much more complex social structure - more time for mating, feeding, and play. They can rear their young in a stress free environment. Things to remember when dolphin watching:
Get out on the water! While you can sometimes spot dolphins from shore, it is much more interactive to get up close and personal.Take videos instead of photos, dolphins are quick and sometimes it's hard to get them in a single shot. Dolphins are attracted to the wake of the boat, sometimes looking behind you is better than looking off the bow.

One of the most underrated activities to do in Marco Island is shore fishing. There are many spots to fish from around Marco Island including sand dollar spit situated on the north end Tigertail Beach and under the Jolley Bridge. Another popular fishing area is Keewaydin Island- the southern tip of the island has been known to be a fairly hot spot (see photos below). A variety of species can be caught including; snook, snapper, whiting, spanish mackerel, sheepshead, redfish, flounder, and trout.
The beauty of shore fishing is it's simple and requires only a few essentials. Below are a few suggestions for things you'll need for a successful fishing endeavor:
Fishing License, which can be easily purchased online via FWC.
Fishing rod and reel Simple rig set up, we recommend a slip sinker with a 2 foot snell on a size 6 hook Some bait - fresh or frozen shrimp A bucket or a some sort of carrying vessel to put your catch in (if you plan to keep your catch!)
We love a catch and release but if you do end up keeping your catch, The Snook Inn, Sand Bar, Cocomos, or Pelican Bend can cook up your fresh catch for you - prepared the way you want it!

Keewaydin Island is a barrier island located within the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Reserve. It is bordered by an inland waterway to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. The west side of the island captures an impressive deposit of shell species including: fighting conchs, horses conchs, lighting welk, junonia, floridia worm shell, tulips, olives, auger, and more. Bring a small mesh bag. This will make it easy to collect and clean shells while gathering
Pay attention to the tides. Here is a Marco Island's tide chart. A low tide is the best time for shelling because there is more beach exposed.
